Quote from "Good Old Neon":

"What goes on inside is just too fast and huge and all interconnected for words to do more than barely sketch the outlines of at most one tiny little part of it at a given instant."

And yet, those outlines of those tiny little parts were sketched so goddamn well. I would write more about it but it's just too sad and baffling.

Oh, and fuck Michiko Kakutani for calling Infinite Jest "self-indulgent." That book is exactly the opposite. It is a huge, generous, wide-open playground of a book and I suspect that she has never actually read it.

Here is a far better meditation on what's been lost.

More of an obituary-type article. Beware, the mom part made me cry.

(I did not spend nearly this much link-time on September 11 or indeed any other humanitarian disaster. Thousands dead in terror attack? What a shame. Suicide of an author who changed my life? LINK CITY. I am an ivory-tower snob who apparently only steps out of my introverted diary shell when the event affects my future artistic enjoyment. Or lack thereof.)

(In conclusion, I suck.)

Terrible news. Plus the Bears lost and played like crap. I was already depressed because my one of my most favorite authors took himself off the map, and then I had to watch stupid Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme whine to the ref after every call. Man, there is no faster way to make me hate you in a football way than being a big baby about penalties or so-called late hits. OH POOR YOU.

Blah. I am not feeling very cheerful or amusing or fit to write online today. I think I am losing the game.
